Protecting the Home Front

Since 1971, The Saint Louis County Police Department has provided helicopter patrol, search and rescue capabilities to the citizens of the Greater Saint Louis Metropolitan Area.  The Saint Louis County Police Department has supplied the citizens it serves and the officers responsible to ensure the safety of these citizens with an unprecedented tool, aerial law enforcement.

In March 2004, St. Louis County Police Chief, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief and the St. Charles County Sheriff decided to join efforts in airborne law enforcement with St. Louis County. This progressive, cost effective approach combined their resources to ensure that the Greater St. Louis Area has one of the largest and finest air support units in the country called the Metro Air Support Unit. This unit is fully dedicated to providing quality air support to both the citizens and police officers of the city and county. This joint effort is staffed with four St. Louis County police officers, four St. Louis city officers and one St. Charles County Deputy. To help improve operational efficiency and cost effectiveness, the St. Louis County Police Department, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the St. Charles County Sheriffs Department have made a very responsible decision in this joint venture.

We Need Your Help

We all live in an open society that is often dangerous. Family members, friends, neighbors and business associates depend on law enforcement to ensure their safety. Our city and county police officers do everything in their power to keep all of us safe. However, they need advanced equipment to do their job more effectively. Aerial law enforcement is an especially potent program that protects us, and changes are under way to improve it.

All of us are safer at work and play, thanks to Metro Air Support, which has protected the citizens of the Greater St. Louis Metropolitan Area with aerial law enforcement by using its helicopter patrol search and rescue capabilities. However, several factors are threatening the continuation of aerial law enforcement.

We need your financial support

Below is a brief overview of why we need your contribution. In the following pages, you can read an in-depth description of the Metro Airborne Law Enforcement program.
Thank you for contributing to this important program.

Here’s the Run Down

It’s a simple fact: our annual budget doesn’t cover what we need to serve the community. The city of St. Louis, St. Charles County and St. Louis County jointly fund our services, but the demands of our constituents and surrounding communities are threatening our ability to meet basic needs, much less grow. Our fleet of four helicopters and one plane is aging. Parts are becoming scarce. And because of the aging fleet, operational and fuel expenses are rising.

The events of September 11, 2001 demanded new initiatives in the defense of homeland security. This broadening effort has dramatically increased the daily financial burdens incurred by the Air Support Unit, yet the need for protection has never been greater. In the meantime, our charter to assist with law enforcement activities in the region continues to expand.
Metro conducts hundreds of displays, demonstrations and tours of the equipment, capabilities, facilities and resources at its disposal. Requests for our services continue to grow. However, our funds will not stretch to meet the demand.

All of us in the region are beneficiaries of Metro Air Support. Now is the time to support this essential service. Now is the time to support those who are protecting our precious freedoms.
